The Collaborative Relationship Between Schools and Families of Students with Disabilities

ABSTRACT:
Parents’ involvement with schools is a key in promoting the inclusive education for students with disabilities in mainstream schools. This is because the success of any educational setting with regard to inclusive education depends largely on communication between teachers and parents. This research therefore, explores the reality of parents of students with disabilities collaborative relationship with schools to enhance their children’s learning. It also aims to reveal the barriers to parents’ involvement with schools and eventually come up with suggestions to overcome them. In order to achieve the research aims, quantitative research approach was adopted using questionnaires with 189 special teachers working in mainstream schools that are running inclusive education programs. More than half of the teachers believe that the ‘parents of students with disabilities are happy to include their children in mainstream schools. However, the majority of teachers reported insufficient level of collaboration and involvement of parents with schools.
