Ecological Memory and PTSD in Animals: An Exploration of Post-Traumatic Stress on the memory of Non-humans in Ambikasuthan Mangad’s Enmakaje
Githin Gigi Mannakunnil, Dr. K Shantichitra
ABSTRACT:
The anthropocene and its endeavors, currently function in such a way that it disrupts the ecosystem, a complex web of biotic and abiotic entities. The paper explores the ecological memory of non-human animals in a devastated environment and the impact of its trauma, on the life of nonhuman living beings in the novel, Enmakaje written by Ambikasuthan Mangad with cross references to the concept of ecological memory. The study provides an analysis of the disturbing memories of an ecological disaster and the traumatic recall of the same, in the psyche of non-human animals. The concept of ecological memory by Padisak (1992) states how the antecedent conditions have an effect on the dynamics of an ecosystem. This is an exploration of the long-standing effects of eco trauma on animals and their attempt to survive in an ecosphere where everything around them is putrefying due to years of ecological poisoning. The paper elucidates the consequences and bearing of post-traumatic stress in the non-humans and their road towards recovery in the anthropogenic world.
