ABSTRACT:

The objective of the present study was to identify the predictive role of perceived stress and various socio-demographic variables in career satisfaction, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue. We recruited a total of 120 resident Doctors of Internal Medicine from different hospitals of Pakistan. The study utilized a mixed-method approach to assess the perception of stress, the role of monthly income, and the clearance of Inter-Mediate Module Examinations (IMM) among residents using a purposive convenient sampling technique. Results of both qualitative and quantitative parts of the study revealed that monthly income, IMM exams, leisure time, and stress predict compassion fatigue while team support in decision-making and learning predicts career satisfaction. The results provide healthcare professionals including young trainee residents the empirical evidence of team support in career satisfaction and lessening stress and also warn against the risk factors of compassion fatigue.
