Localizing Japanese Street Fashion in Hong Kong
Prof. Dr. Wai Ng
ABSTRACT:
Japanese street fashion has been very popular among youngsters in Hong Kong for decades. They read Japanese fashion magazines, wear Japanese brands and follow Tokyo latest trends. However, Hong Kong young people do not blindly follow Japanese fashion. They selectively choose some Japanese elements and add local elements to form a kind of hybrid fashion. It is indeed a common pattern of local consumption of Japanese popular culture in East Asia. Based on fieldwork-based research, this paper examines how Hong Kong young people localize Japanese street fashion and explains the reasons behind this local adaptation.
