Strategic Group Analysis in the Tourism Industry: A Destination’s Perspective
Georgios Tsoupros, Sotirios Varelas, Ioannis Anastasopoulos
ABSTRACT:
Strategic group analysis constitutes one of the most significant methodological tools that a decision-maker can utilize to explore the external environment of the business in which they operate. In a constantly evolving sector such as tourism, strategic groups could have a critical role especially at assessing destinations, where a limited number of academic studies are found in the literature. To address this, the following research presents an extensive literature review of strategic group analysis’ applications at tourism businesses and destinations. Subsequently, the model is applied to cases of competitive destinations within Greece, ranking them based on their occupancy rate, carrying capacity, and attractiveness in terms of overnight stays, in a 3D strategic group analysis. The structure of this methodology and its results could be useful to both destination management and marketing organizations (DMMOs) in the process of strategy formulation and to potential investors, as it will provide a holistic, data-driven approach to evaluating destinations based on their attractiveness, tourism demand, and sustainability, in terms of their carrying capacity.
