Using of Skill Demonstration Videos to Facilitate Nursing Students’ Skill Competencies

Background: Simulation training is commonly used in nursing education as a way to teach basic nursing skills, supplementary to the clinical experience. Using skill demonstration videos alongside traditional simulation can bridge the gap between theory and practical performance, and provide the opportunity for continuous learning. The aim of this work was to evaluate students’ experiences of the use of skill demonstration videos alongside lectures and simulation training during fundamental nursing skills course.
Summary of Work: Ninety first-year nursing students enrolled in the course, during which they learn basic clinical skills through lectures, skill demonstration videos and simulation training. Following the course, participants completed an electronic survey to evaluate the course. Students rated the extent to which the videos contributed to their self-confidence and preparedness for performing the clinical skills. In addition, students were allowed to write their own comments regarding the course activities.
Summary of Results: Most students reported that the simulation training improved their preparedness to the experience in the clinical setting (89%). Specifically, practicing in simulation trainings was particularly helpful in improving measuring vital signs (84%), performing an enema (79%), inserting a nasogastric tube  (83%), performing injections (85%), preparing a fluid infusion (85%), inserting a urinary catheter (82%), and giving oxygen and inhalations (82%). With regard to the skill demonstration videos, most students believed that watching the videos increased their self-confidence (80%) and their preparedness (79%) in performing the clinical skills in the simulation and in the clinical setting. In their comments, students say that the videos contributed to better understanding of the theoretical materials, improved sense of preparedness before actual practice, save them time during the practice, and enable unlimited watching in their free time.
Discussion and Conclusion: Using videos in clinical education alongside traditional methods such as lectures and simulation training supports learners’ competencies. In the future it is important to evaluate the potentially benefit of this strategy in creating standard teaching, as well as saving resources such as time, infrastructures and work force that are often scarce.
Take home message: In an era of technology, it is essential to support the students’ learning with diverse learning means to achieve better academic and clinical results.
