ABSTRACT:

The intricate and multifaceted nature of regional and global politics in South Asia renders the region vulnerable to the economically and militarily weaker states. Situated within this complex geopolitical landscape, Bangladesh grapples with a myriad of opportunities, challenges, and dilemmas. The volatile nature of regional and international politics in South Asia has hindered the region’s prosperity, presenting a pressing issue for smaller and weaker states such as Bangladesh. This article undertakes an analysis of the dilemmas and paradoxes faced by weaker nations in South Asia, stemming from rapidly shifting geopolitical realities and global political and economic upheavals. The aim of this study is to examine the realities and dilemmas that Bangladesh, as a smaller and weaker state in South Asia, has confronted over the years. Employing a historical geographic approach and qualitative research methods, the study seeks to unravel the complexities arising from Bangladesh’s historical context, geographical location, geopolitical stance, regional power rivalries, and the influence of key global powers. In-depth expert interviews and a review of recent literature are utilised to comprehend the policy approaches towards these dilemmas and paradoxes. The study discusses that weaknesses and failures among local powers, lack of cooperation among states, and weak institutions have been largely influenced by external powers seeking to exert their influence in South Asia. Furthermore, regional rivalries and extra-regional power competition in South Asia create dilemmas and paradoxes for states, particularly for weaker ones like Bangladesh. Given its strategic position, Bangladesh is especially susceptible to regional and global pressures, necessitating a robust and independent foreign policy. Ultimately, the study recommends greater unity and collaboration among small and weak countries in South Asia to navigate the challenges and dilemmas they face, safeguarding their national interests, territorial integrity, and regional stability and security.
