Integration of Refugees from Ukraine on the Example of the Polish Labour Market: Challenges and Support Strategies
Magdalena Pokrzywa
ABSTRACT:
At the end of March 2024, there were around 5.9 million refugees from Ukraine in Europe. About 80% of them are women and children. Currently, about 952,106 refugees from Ukraine are registered in Poland. It is estimated that about 350,000 Ukrainian refugees are employed in Poland (Deloitte, UNHCR, 2024). The aim of this article is to analyze the process of integration of refugees from Ukraine into the Polish labor market, with particular emphasis on the challenges they face and support strategies that can facilitate their professional integration. The literature review includes statistical data, empirical research reports, NGO reports, and public policy analyses. The results of the analysis indicate the complexity of professional integration processes. The article discusses the main challenges related to integration, such as language barriers, cultural differences, lack of recognition of professional qualifications, mismatch of qualifications to the needs of the Polish labour market, limited access to training, etc. Examples of good practices and initiatives that can support refugees in the integration process are also presented, including training programmes, career counselling and psychological support. The article emphasizes the importance of institutional support and social initiatives in the integration process.
