A Bibliometric and Integrative Review on Tourism Gentrification and Lifestyle Migration: Pathways Toward Regenerative Tourism
Maja Nikšić Radić, Daniel Dragičević
ABSTRACT:
The main aim of this research is to conduct a bibliometric and integrative review to explore the link between tourism gentrification and lifestyle migration, examining their potential role in fostering regenerative tourism. Research combines bibliometric analysis with scoping review methods, spanning literature from 2007 to 2024 to provide a comprehensive examination of these phenomena. The analysis utilized the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases, conducted using VOSViewer and Biblioshiny. This study investigates a relatively unexplored field, so the final evaluation focuses on a modest collection of 61 papers. Beside uncovering the latest scholarly works, notable authors, essential keywords, and authoritative sources relevant to the subject area, this research identifies six distinct thematic clusters with one of these clusters clearly illustrating a pathway toward regenerative tourism through the lens of lifestyle migration. Lifestyle migration involves individuals relocating to improve their living conditions and intersects with tourism gentrification, which is marked by displacement and real estate speculation in popular areas. While tourism gentrification can have adverse socio-economic impacts, such as heightened spatial inequality, it also creates opportunities for regenerative tourism if managed effectively. Lifestyle migrants can introduce new economic activities and sustainable value systems, which, when properly managed, can lead to both environmental and socio-economic regeneration. This dynamic contributes to a more balanced and restorative model of tourism.
