Cross-Cultural Imprints in Business Ethics Issues: A Bibliometric Overview

ABSTRACT:
Today’s global managers face multiple cross-cultural challenges when trying to institutionalize standard business ethics practices in culturally diverse branches. The present paper aims at performing a literature review of the cross-cultural business ethics field through the lenses of a bibliometric analysis. On a sample of 713 scientific articles retrieved from the Web of Science Database, Core Collection, several bibliometric inquiries have been performed using the VOSviewer software. Results of the co-occurrence analysis showed the most frequently used keywords in culturally related issues within corporate ethics include “values”, “behavior”, “management”, “corporate social responsibility” and “culture”. A co-citation analysis of the references confirmed the influence of classical papers in the field such as Hofstede’s (1980), Treviño’s (1986), and Wood’s (2000) work. Furthermore, a co-authorship analysis revealed some unique cross-cultural collaboration patterns, whilst a country citation analysis proved the Anglo-Saxon countries have the most prolific authors in the field. Finally, a source citation analysis identified the Journal of Business Ethics as the most cited source in the field, followed by Business Ethics Quarterly, European Business Review and International Business Review. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of the intellectual structure in crosscultural business research helping scholars in identifying gaps that have not yet been addressed.
