Global Positioning System in the Cultural Heritage Mediation and Education
The paper relates to various up-to-date possibilities to mediate cultural heritage or other targets of curriculum. Particularly, it deals with an interactive outdoor guide designed for smartphones, which introduces the sights of the Věrovany village (Olomouc Region, Czech Republic). While presenting the final output, the paper will also address the process of its creation. The way the Global Positioning System works, that is, the vital part of the guide, will be also introduced. The guide has been created in the Urwigo application builder which offers many possibilities for developing unique activities for pupils and visitors (providing information and photographs at the visited location, navigation to the next stop, offering tasks with an immediate feedback, hints etc.). It will be discussed how it can be used to mediate history, arts, geography, languages etc. Urwigo is free of charge and everyone interested (teachers, educators, culture animators) can create non-commercial GPS-based projects with specific requirements or preferences.
