Moving Towards a Stable Society: The Just Family
Dr. Sutapa Ray
ABSTRACT:
Family is an institution that is most intimately related to our social existence and determines the fate of society. It is this institution that is largely responsible for the upholding of social values, ideologies, principles, customs, and mores that form the framework on which society stands lofty. Any attack on this basic unit of social life automatically results in the fear of the entire superstructure, the society, collapsing. In my paper, I have raised some relevant questions regarding disturbing trends of family life patterns in today’s modern society and attempted to answer them. Questions like “Is society disintegrating due to the turmoil within the Family? Why is the Family seemingly under threat? What constitutes a ‘Just’ Family?” have been addressed in this paper. I attempt to redefine the concept of ‘family’ from a broad perspective as opposed to the traditional concept of family. Next, I examine the challenges faced by this institution for its very existence. I attempt to establish that the evolving concept of a “Just” Family may be the answer to many of the maladies related to the present family patterns of society. I also depict how the balance between individualistic rights and the philosophy of care ethics would establish a ‘JUST’ family.
