ABSTRACT:

Automotive industry of Iran has faced several turbulences owing to geopolitical obstacles imposed by western countries. In this analysis, the focus is on the impact of international restrictions on the automotive industry’s research and development sector. The main objective of this paper is to determine whether the industry has been successful in terms of self-sufficiency and expansion of the research and development sector, given the considerable state involvement in the localization of know-how knowledge transferred from traditional cooperations. To address these challenges, the current research has adopted a descriptive-analytical methodology by utilizing national-scale statistics as well as press news to illustrate the potential shifts in the state policy regarding knowledge-based activities in the industry. The findings of this study emphasize that within the first phase of the imposed sanctions, the industry experienced a sharp increase in investment in the R&D sector. However, during the lifted-sanction phase, this investment decreased due to the recreation of foreign linkages. Despite this setback, the industry has continued to demonstrate its ability to innovate and adapt to changing circumstances.
