Gender Inequalities In Polish Textbooks Based On The European Gender Equality Index
Aleksandra Gajda, Iwona Omelańczuk, Agnieszka Wołowicz
As indicated by key gender equality reports (including the Gender Equality Index, Equal Measures 2030 SDG Gender Index or Gender Inequality Index), the road to equalizing opportunities between women and men in many countries is still long, while gender stereotypes and polarization in key areas of life is significant. School, as one of the first socialization environments, plays a key role in the formation of gender awareness, therefore it should rather reduce inequalities and fight stereotypical perceptions of gender, not deepen them. Meanwhile, the results of many studies on the school environment, including the content of textbooks, indicate that gender is still strongly stereotyped. The aim of the study was a comprehensive analysis of the content of school textbooks, based on the determinants of the European Gender Equality index. A qualitative thematic analysis was carried out, the results of which indicate a high gender polarization contained in Polish school textbooks.
