ABSTRACT:

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that appears before the age of 3. It is associated with learning difficulties. It is characterized by limitations in communication, social interaction, stereotyped and repetitive behaviors.
There are several methods that aim to develop communication skills in autistic people. Among the communication systems most used in Morocco, we find the PECS.
Our study is based in an association in Casablanca, it focused on directional interviews with autism specialists, direct observation of 6 autistic children, verbal and non-verbal autistic children with mental retardation and without mental retardation as well as filmed videos of these children before the use of the PECS and after the application in order to measure the changes in the development of the communication and language skills of the autistic children after the PECS in order to ensure the effectiveness of the latter.
We found a remarkable evolution in communicative behaviors in autistic children without mental retardation and with retardation after the application of the PECS but in different phases that remain related to the child’s previous skills in imitation.
