Role Of social media In Outreaching the Protests: A Case Study on The Rohit Vemula Movement
Aliya Ali P.E
ABSTRACT:
‘Justice for Rohit Vemula Movement’ – a student-led movement that emerged in India in
2016 following the suicide of a Dalit Ph.D. scholar at the University of Hyderabad – Rohit Vemula. The movement sought to shed light on the discrimination and prejudice cast upon the marginalized sections of Indian society. The movement also called for the end of caste-based discrimination prevalent in India’s so-called developed society. The movement gained widespread attention and support through the storming hashtags of new media. The contribution of social media is inevitable in organizing mass protests among students. The objective of the paper is to analyze the fact that the age-old patriarchal system is still responsible for the rising social movement and the impact of social media on unfurling the ideas of the movement. The methodology used is primary and secondary data. It also depends upon the various reports, journals, and articles.
