Dynamics of Skilled Indian Migration to Thailand: Motivations, Challenges, and Contributions

Dr. Ruchi Agarwal

ABSTRACT:

The Indian diaspora has significantly contributed to the Thai economy due to its long history. Different phases of Indian migration have occurred in Thailand, with skilled migration being the most recent and significant. Compared to the Chinese community in Thailand, there were less than 15,000 highly competent Indian migrants in 2019 (pre-COVID era), according to official estimates. This disparity raises intriguing questions about the motivations and incentives that attract competent Indian professionals to Thailand and the obstacles they face to establishing themselves abroad. The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate the reasons for the migration of educated Indians to Thailand. This chapter will discuss the challenges, contributions, benefits, and adaptation strategies of this group of migrants as they attempt to adapt to a new society outside of their native country. The research used primary data and secondary data incorporating in-depth interviews and observations of Indian skilled migrants as well as past literature and reports from different Thai ministries.
