The Investigative Competencies of University Professors: A Literary Review

Lorena Pérez Penup

ABSTRACT:

One of the primary roles of universities is to generate knowledge through research. However, the fulfillment of this role is influenced by various factors, with the investigative abilities of university faculty being particularly significant. In this context, this study aimed to comprehend the current state of research regarding the investigative competencies of university professors and the existing gaps in this domain by analyzing scientific literature published from 2008 to 2023. To achieve this goal, a systematic literature review was conducted, encompassing the planning, selection, extraction, and analysis of relevant scientific articles. The findings reveal a growing interest in emerging countries, in delineating the investigative competencies of university faculty. Additionally, the study identifies a prevalent use of quantitative methods in investigating these competencies and a tendency to focus on describing specific rather than general investigative skills among faculty members. Consequently, future research endeavors could prioritize a comprehensive approach to identifying investigative competencies and incorporate mixed methods to enrich the understanding of this area.
