Impact of Maritime Traffic on Air Quality in Port Areas – Challenges and Solutions in Latvia

ABSTRACT:

This paper examines the influence of maritime vessels as a major source of air pollution in harbor areas of Latvia. The ship traffic can cause increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and particulate matter pollution in harbor areas. These emissions mainly result from ship engines but partly from activities related to ports, affecting air quality and global warming. Constant and localized measurements (stationary and mobile) inside the port area are required to assess emission dynamics and develop effective mitigation strategies. Currently, CO₂ concentrations are not monitored locally in ports but are observed only globally via satellite data. Similarly, NOₓ levels are typically estimated rather than directly measured. The results show that the major hotspot in Latvia is around Cape Kolka, where vessels enter the Gulf of Riga. Our ECO2_Port project team proposes a comprehensive strategy and tools to monitor pollution levels from ships entering the port areas on the example of Latvia. The inclusion of CO₂ and other gases in fixed air pollution stations and mobile (drones) would provide high-resolution data needed for environmental estimation in proper terms. This approach aims to enhance understanding of maritime pollution impacts, support compliance with international environmental standards, and promote sustainable port operations that minimize ecological impact.
