How Environmental Uncertainty Impacts on Radicalness of Innovation Engage by Tourism Firms
Dioni Elche, Ángela Martínez-Pérez, Pedro M. García-Villaverde
ABSTRACT:
This paper addresses the debate on how managers’ perception of environmental factors influences the radicalness of innovation engaged by hospitality and tourism firms (HTFs), from the cognitive perspective of management. The aim is to analyze the effects of market dynamism, technological turbulence, threat of imitation, and competitive intensity on incremental and radical innovation in HTFs located in tourism destinations. The empirical study uses original data from firms located in UNESCO World Heritage Cities in Spain. The results show divergent linear and curvilinear effects of the managers’ perception of market dynamism, technological turbulence, imitation threat, and competitive intensity on both radical and incremental innovation. This paper contributes to disaggregate the specific effects of each environmental factor on each type of innovation according to its radicalness in the context of HTFs located in tourism destinations. From a theoretical approach, it reinforces the link between the cognitive perspective of management and the hospitality and tourism field to better understand how managers of HTFs in destinations interpret the environment and make decisions on the radicalness of innovations.
