ABSTRACT:

This research aimed to examine the effectiveness and challenges of bilingual Education in Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. Specifically, the research aimed to address students’/teachers’ perceptions on the relevance of the bilingual program to their personal goals, students’ /teachers’ perceptions on the existence of a clear language policy in their department, students’/teachers’ perceptions on the teaching, learning and assessment, students’/teachers’ perceptions on language awareness and use, and students’/teachers’ perceptions on what the department could do to improve the bilingual program. The results show that bilingual programs need to submit a clearly defined language policy justifying the shift to a bilingual program. These programs should specify the reasons why some specific courses are going to be taught in English and others in Arabic. Also, these programs need to show evidence that teaching a particular course in English has improved achievement. Furthermore, language of assessment must be aligned to the language of instruction and to the course objectives and to the course materials.
