Women’s Right to Work in the Journal of Kadınlar Dünyası Historical Background, Discussions, and Struggle
Among the many journals adressing the Ottoman women, Kadınlar Dünyası magazine presents itself as a publication that follows the international feminist movement and strives to bring their nation and women to the level of progressed civilizations. In this respect, the participation of women in working life is of great importance for the board of directors and authors of the journal on the way to this goal. Stating that women can fight for themselves and that they will not back down on the right to education and work, the magazine took its stance by not needing the support of the male-dominated discourse and publications. In this study, the issue of women’s participation to working life in the Journal of Kadınlar Dünyası will be discussed by examining the texts written, and the process with the Telephone Company will be discussed with reference to success of the journal. Before discussing these in detail, the history of Ottoman women’s working life will be summarized, and the ideas and discussions on the inclusion of women in working life will be mentioned.
