Migration and Gender: The Discourse of the Other in Public Discourse

Maria Kalfa

ABSTRACT:

The representation of the Other in public Discourse is carried out in various ways of manipulation. Particularly in the case of immigrant women, the ‘double stigma’ operates in such a way that it reproduces and establishes gender stereotypes, which adversely affect women’s integration in the host country. Gender issues have negative consequences for these women both personally and professionally. In the Discourse that has been formed for these women, especially in the 90’s, it adversely affected their image. More specifically, there is a strong spirit of stigmatization, undermining and a distorted perception of things that feeds these women with negative prejudices. This paper examines the experience of women from Bulgaria, the obstacles and opportunities for their integration in Greece. The research was based on interviews conducted with immigrant women who have been living in Greece for several years.
