The Social and Cultural Inclusion within Programs of  Vietnamese Bachelor of English Language Teacher Education

Dr. Thi Phuong Lan Nguyen, Dr. Vu Quang

ABSTRACT:

Social and cultural inclusion skills are one of essential goals of any higher education programs, especially English Language Teacher Education (ELTE) Bachelor programs. The presentation was part of my PhD study conducted to investigate preparations of essential skills standards, including social and cultural inclusion, for Vietnamese ELTE programs. The results reveal that a high percentage of Vietnamese students are not confident with their social and cultural inclusion skills despite high scores of assessments in related courses. The participating students perceived that their poor social and cultural inclusion skills are resulted from their poor English knowledge and proficiency skills. However, lecturers had quite different perceptions. This presentation will focus on insufficient preparation of the training program for essential skills and a low level of alignment between policy and practice regarding social and cultural inclusion skills standards within researched programs. Suggestions by educators and managers to improve outcomes of ELTE programs in general, and to improve the social and cultural inclusion skills in particular will be discussed. The study will be meaningful not only for ELTE educators, instructors, and learners, but also for policy makers and manager. The results can be applicable for other countries sharing the same teaching and learning conditions.
