Narratives of Women in a Relationship with a Narcissist: Case Study

ABSTRACT:

Narcissism is a personality characteristics of individuals who focus on self and exploit others especially people close to them, including romantic partners, for personal gain. Narcissistic individual tend to have short term successful relationships and long term problems in a committed relationship. An individual with the narcissistic traits most negatively affects their romantic partner to the extent that the partners may chose to leave them. The goal of the current research paper is exploring women’s experiences with their narcissistic partners. For the research 7 case studies have been included to understand the quality of the relationship, and the experience of the women. The data has been collected using semi structured interviews of the narcissistic women partners to explore their relationship experience with a narcissist man. The study focuses on the narratives of the women talking about staying in a relationship with narcissistic man. The participants were aged between 25 – 35 years old, who have been in a relationship with the narcissistic man for about few years. Qualitative research methodology has been used and thus the analysis is done using the framework of thematic analysis. The findings contribute to the body of the literature informing low relationship satisfaction, self-doubt and dark experiences while staying in the relationship with the narcissist partner.
