Organization of the Relationship Between Educational Materials and Skills for Human Resources Development in Open Science Practices

ABSTRACT:
Currently, researchers, research support staffs, and students in the lab are facing the growing open science trends. They are expected to cultivate their knowledge about open access and data-management skills.Various educational resources have been developed and help their capacity building. Nevertheless, this study contends that these existing resources do not fully consider what is an efficient learning. Specifically, in the absence of thorough evaluation of 1) the definition of necessary skills, 2) a set of materials for them, and 3) the organization of the skills and educational resources for each position, researchers (including research support staffs, and students) and remain difficult to distinguish which knowledges are necessary to acquire skills for them. It is crucial to systematically link skill descriptions with existing educational resources and to create an effective curriculum. This task is challenging, and manual methods cannot meet the real-time demands of rapidly developing open science environments. In this study, as a preliminary step towards developing a learning curriculum, we matched existing educational resources with existing skill list required in this field. We accomplished this by vectorizing the text from the educational resources and skill descriptions, using natural language processing techniques to calculate the similarity between these vectors. This method quantifies the textual similarity based on sentence meanings, facilitating an automated approach to match educational resources with skills. This proposal outlines a methodology for curriculum development that shows researchers which educational resources they need to learn to acquire skills, providing a systematic and efficient alternative to manual processes.
