Jobs and Occupational Risk Management in Electrical Engineering Construction Sites: Between Profit and Survival

ABSTRACT:
There are various professional professions practiced in Cameroon, including electrical engineering and its categories (technicians, installation operators, safety and prevention). Thus, each specialty provides complementary expertise to ensure the compliance of installations. However, it is clear that risk prevention is neglected in favour of its management, because it involves financial expenses, time-consuming deadlines, but also the absence of workers due to the significant consequences of electric shocks (direct/indirect), falls, fires/explosions. Here, the objective is to present the safety and performance issues in electrical engineering construction sites, showing how the sector’s professions can balance operational efficiency and risk prevention to ensure the survival of workers. A survey of popular markets in the cities of Yaoundé and Douala allowed us to question the budget for electrical installations, the contracting company and the technicians in the field. Through interviews and observations with occupants (10), technicians (5) and owners (5), we carried out an installation and data analysis to draw the following conclusions: the installation equipment is of poor quality; shop owners favour lower-cost offers; technicians overestimate the need for work equipment to seek profit and endanger the lives of occupants and visitors.
