Experiences of Parents from the LGBTQIA+ Community of Family Health Nursing
Julie Tracey
ABSTRACT:
Parenthood for many is coupled with joy, fulfilment, excitement however for parents from the LGBTQIA+ community this may not be the case. LGBTQIA+ family rights for example legal advances have been made however the lived experiences of parents from this community have and continue to be tainted by exclusion, inequity and despair. The aim of this research study is to gain insight into the experiences of parents from the LGBTQIA+ community of Family Health Nursing and to generate recommendations to influence policy and practice to enhance the inclusive and person-centred provision of Family Health Nursing for parents from the LGBTQIA+ community. This study will adopt a Participatory Research (PR) methodology complimented with an emancipatory research perspective and include those who influence and determine policy alongside those who will be recipients of policy. Non-probability convenience sampling will be utilised to recruit participants. This study will flow through four phases and has commenced with a meta-ethnography as the first phase. Phase two will involve quantitative data collection in the form of an online questionnaire, which is due to be shared in June. Following collaborative analysis of this data a focus group schedule for phase three will be agreed. Following the completion of the focus groups, data will be presented to a collaborative action team who have been actively involved from the inception of this study. Analysis will be undertaken using the Critical Creative Hermeneutics Analysis Model. The meta-ethnography has been completed and resulted in an overarching concept of ‘Hidden in plain sight’ evolving. Three main themes namely ‘Hello, I am a parent’, ‘In a boat with no paddles’ and ‘The silent struggle’ contributed to the overall concept.
