Why Do We Want to Take a Psychologically Satisfying Trip Again?
Youngsoo Kim
ABSTRACT:
A psychologically satisfying trip can contribute to desire to act. In the process of desire formation, psychological needs might be one of the core concepts in that it articulates self-determining characteristics such as autonomy. In addition, the sense of belonging and competence plays a significant role in representing the necessity of innate needs of the human being. Relatedly, three components of psychological need satisfaction focus on autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Based on self-determination theory, psychological need satisfaction has been widely explored to investigate its effects on well-being. However, past studies did not fully explore why people have the desire of taking need-satisfying trips. Therefore, this research attempts to offer further insight into the relationship between psychological need satisfaction and travel desire. More specifically, this research aims to suggest a conceptual framework, assuming each factor of psychological need satisfaction has positive associations with travel desire. The research aim can be achieved by confirming the proposed framework through quantitative methodology. To examine and differentiate distinct but conceptually related factors, i.e., autonomy, relatedness, and competence, in tourism contexts, exploratory factor analysis will be initially conducted. To confirm relationships between psychological need satisfaction and desire to travel, regression analysis will be conducted. Finally, this research discusses theoretical implications given the established assumptions that explain individuals’ desire developed through elements of psychological need satisfaction. Above all, the expected findings will help tourism organisations to have better understanding about tourists.
