ABSTRACT:

A sense is linked to an experience. It is determined by the individual’s emotions and environmental factors. This research investigates how current advances in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology can be utilized to collect five senses landscape parameters for the Portuguese Saint James Way.

A method for describing a Portuguese St. James Way route was developed. Data was collected by taking advantage of the ability of mobile devices and the internet to save and analyze results. There are few research on the application of technology in sensescape evaluation. This can help to expand the scenery and pilgrimage possibilities. To collect landscape sensescape attributes, a link between fieldwork and digitalization was used, notably Smart Surveys. In this scenario, technology is critical since it allows for the collection of qualitative landscape qualities in situ based on prior categorization. To do geographic analysis and see data saved in the cloud, a geodatabase was established. The findings enhance the contribution of research on the five senses and tourism, particularly through the use of an app created with a smart survey to collect images and qualitative features of landscapes.
