Mahjallin Araiza B. Diez
ABSTRACT:
Objectives: The objectives were to describe the first-time mothers’ experiences of balancing career and parenting, to understand the challenges faced by first-time mothers in managing both work and parenting responsibilities, to identify different strategies employed by first-time mothers in juggling work and parenthood and to propose a counseling program for first-time mothers to aid in navigating their roles.
Methods: The study used a referral sampling method, with inclusion criteria being that participants should be first-time mothers and have a child or children not older than 5 years old. In-depth interviews were conducted with the participants through video conferencing using ZOOM. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data gathered from the interviews.
Discussion: Several themes emerged as critical factors in the experiences of first-time mothers balancing their careers and parenting responsibilities. The themes of productivity, role-modeling, and empowerment were noted as essential elements for success. However, mothers also faced several challenges, including time management, neglecting self-care, limited support, and coping with guilt. Respondents’ statements highlighted the strategies that first-time moms use to balance their careers and parenthood effectively, including help-seeking, task management, and personal development.
Conclusion: The study contributes to the understanding of the experiences of first-time mothers as they navigate the demands of work and parenting. The study findings have important implications for policymakers, employers, and individuals, highlighting the importance of support for first-time mothers in managing work and parenting responsibilities.
