ABSTRACT:
Although progress in acceptance and treatment of the LGBTQIA+ community has occurred, disparities still exist. Growing awareness of gaps in medical education among LGBTQIA+ patients led to implementation of LGBTQIA+ focused IPE for learners at all levels. This study evaluated an Interprofessional QAP Proposal Workshop related to provision of care for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Participants worked in interprofessional teams to design a quality improvement project in response to a ‘Call for Proposals’. Specifically, evaluating whether a 15-minute educational intervention prior to the workshop influenced participant Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceived Future Practice with LGBTQIA+ individuals. Primary findings indicated regardless of whether participants were in the control or intervention group, a statistically significant difference occurred across all three domains indicating participation in the QAP activity, not the intervention, resulted in a difference in Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceived Future Practice. Knowledge (p=0.04) showed a difference from pre- to post-survey overall. COM respondents showed differences in Attitudes (p=0.01) from pre- to post-survey, as well as Perceived Future Practice (p=0.03). Additionally, Perceived Future Practice (p=0.001) proved significant overall further indicating a correlation between the QAP Workshop and differences in Perceived Future Practice with LGBTQIA+ individuals. Qualitative variables resulted in three themes: 1) Development of Knowledge Foundation and Information Sourcing, 2) Philosophy of Interpersonal Interactions, and 3) Integration of Knowledge and Attitudes to Applied Behaviors and Target Outcomes. Ultimately the control group reported a desire for more education and changes to the IPE activity, with the intervention group reporting more frequently increased comfort and respect for persons.
