Gender Identity
Ndonge William Mbua
ABSTRACT:
Gender identity refers to an individual’s deeply felt internal sense of being male, female, a blend of both, neither, or another gender altogether. It may or may not align with the sex assigned at birth. Understanding gender identity is crucial in promoting inclusivity and respecting human rights.
This study aims to explore the concept of gender identity, its diverse expressions, societal challenges faced by individuals with diverse gender identities, and strategies to foster acceptance and support.
A qualitative approach was used, involving literature review and interviews with individuals across different gender identities, including transgender and non-binary persons. This method provided insights into personal experiences and societal attitudes.
Findings highlight that many people experience gender identity beyond the binary framework. However, individuals whose gender identity differs from societal expectations often face discrimination, stigma, and lack of legal recognition.
Recognition and respect for diverse gender identities are essential for human dignity and equality. Lack of understanding and acceptance contributes to marginalization and harms well-being.
Societies must adapt to support gender diversity through inclusive policies, education, and healthcare. Failure to do so perpetuates discrimination and social exclusion.
