ABSTRACT:

After a long legal battle, the Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality in 2018. Since the law of the nation is now in favor of the LGBTQIAA+ community, the public tries to be politically correct by not publically ostracizing them. Those who claim to be aware are more influenced by the social media activism surrounding the legalization of the status, lest they be judged as homophobic, transphobic, a TERF or other such trending labels. The argument that sexual relationships between same-sex people are prohibited by God and by tradition is imbibed deeply into the general conviction of the masses. This study was conceptualized from both a personal and an academic point of view. On a personal level, the authors witnessed a magnanimous amount of misconceptions and continuous mockery of the community. On an academic level, there was a lack of research work on the continuing status and social standing of the community. The current paper delves deep into the issue focusing on the implied homophobia, overcompensation and feigned support extended to the LGBTQIAA+ community in India especially by the young adult population of the country. This paper attempts to highlight the actual repugnance that the mass feels for the LGBTQIAA+ community. The general masses seem to be blissfully ignorant and adamantly uncomfortable in the presence of an individual who ‘dares’ to associate themself with the community, let alone identify as queer. The paper uses qualitative analysis of empirical data gathered via an online survey method. A total of 550 responses have been collected, assessed and discussed with age-groups ranging from 18 to 40. The findings of the paper show that the support to the LGBTQIA+ community is only superficial and is heavily tainted by social discrimination and abhorrence.
