Teaching Foreign Languages in Private Schools in Algeria: Reality and Aspirations – Jabali School as A Model

In recent years, Algeria has witnessed a significant increase in the number of private schools specializing in foreign language education. This trend responds to the growing demand from various social groups to acquire new language skills for professional, academic, or cultural purposes. Jebali School is one such institution striving to provide quality language education.
This paper aims to examine the current state of foreign language teaching in private schools in Algeria, focusing on Jebali School as a case study, and discussing the challenges and future prospects of this sector. The Reality of Foreign Language Teaching in Algeria Foreign language teaching in Algeria is an integral part of the educational system, where French is taught as the first foreign language and English as the second in public schools. However, the need to enhance proficiency in other languages has led to the expansion of private schools and specialized institutes offering instruction in languages such as English, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Turkish. According to a report published on Echorouk Online, learning English represents 80% of the total demand for language learning in private centers, attracting learners from various age groups, including officials, diplomats, and business professionals. The report also noted that 15% of those interested in learning new languages are over 40 years old, reflecting a growing awareness of the importance of acquiring new linguistic skills at all stages of life. The Role of Private Schools in Language Education Private schools play a crucial role in bridging the gap that may exist in the public education system regarding foreign language instruction. These institutions offer diverse educational programs tailored to the needs of learners, including students, professionals, and even retirees looking to acquire new skills. However, this sector faces several challenges. According to a report from El Wassat Algerian Newspaper, the Ministry of Commerce has begun monitoring the activities of private language schools to ensure compliance with required standards and to guarantee the quality of education provided. This reflects the need for better regulation and quality assurance in this field.
