ABSTRACT:

This study presents preliminary results from Despegar Fellows, an independent, self-funded pilot mentorship program addressing socio-economic and informational barriers faced by first-generation, low-income Latin American university students pursuing international academic opportunities. The program employs a culturally responsive, peer-led model delivering individualized mentorship, collaborative workshops on academic writing and application strategies, and ongoing coaching during a 12-week structured training. The inaugural cohorts included 19 students (~80% women) from Peru, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia, all first-generation university students without prior international experience. Participants invested over 740 hours collectively, submitting 60 applications to research scholarships, internships, leadership programs, and exchanges at nine institutions across Peru, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and Germany. Results show a ~90% acceptance rate and over USD $56,000 in secured funding. Self-reported gains include an 125% increase in confidence applying for opportunities, a 177% improvement in academic writing skills, a 96% increase in identifying relevant opportunities, and a 84% growth in digital platform proficiency. Most participants also reported increased motivation, clearer academic and career pathways, and expanded professional networks. These findings highlight the effectiveness of peer-led, context-sensitive mentorship models in mitigating structural inequities and promoting international academic mobility for first-generation Latin American students. This pilot program lays the groundwork for future expansion and rigorous evaluation aimed at advancing educational equity and global inclusion.
