Politics and Lack of Democracy: Effects on the Political Economy in West Africa
Emmanuel Attipoe
ABSTRACT:
Background: West Africa, despite its immense economic potential, grapples with persistent challenges in achieving sustainable development and economic growth. Political instability, characterized by authoritarian regimes and a lack of democratic governance, has been identified as a significant impediment to progress in the region. This abstract explores the intricate relationship between politics, democracy deficit, and their impact on the political economy of West Africa. Objectives: This study aims to elucidate the multifaceted effects of politics and the absence of democratic principles on the political economy of West Africa. Specifically, it seeks to analyze the ways in which authoritarian governance structures, corruption, and weak institutions hinder economic development and exacerbate socio-economic disparities in the region. Methodology: Employing a mixed-methods approach, this research will utilize both quantitative data analysis and qualitative case studies to examine the dynamics of politics and democracy deficit in West Africa. Quantitative analysis will involve statistical modeling to assess the correlation between political stability, democratic governance, and economic indicators such as GDP growth, income inequality, and poverty rates. Qualitative case studies will provide contextual insights into the underlying mechanisms through which political factors influence economic outcomes in select West African countries. Predicted Research Outcomes: It is anticipated that the findings of this study will underscore the detrimental effects of political instability and lack of democracy on the political economy of West Africa. Specifically, the research is expected to highlight how authoritarian governance structures contribute to systemic corruption, undermine investor confidence, and impede inclusive economic growth. Moreover, the study aims to identify potential pathways for reform, emphasizing the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, promoting political accountability, and fostering transparent governance practices to foster sustainable development and enhance economic resilience in West Africa.
