ABSTRACT:

This study investigates the phenomenon of potential migration from Albania, examining both the determinants that shape individuals’ migration intentions and the broader socio-economic implications of these intentions. Since the 1990s, Albania has faced critical demographic and developmental challenges linked to population mobility. The analysis focuses on the social and economic motives and impacts associated with individuals’ migration intentions. The study of potential migration allows us to identify the tendency to migrate before it becomes actual migration. The likelihood that potential migration may evolve into real migration underscores the critical importance of timely policy interventions in developing migration management for sending countries. This study is based on primary data gathered through a survey. It situates migration intentions within the broader frameworks of transition economies, structural inequality, and global labour markets. The findings contribute to theoretical and policy debates on migration decision-making and emphasise the value of such research for policy making, providing evidence-based insights that can lead to the development of strategies for sustainable growth.
