ABSTRACT:

This study analyses the experiences of international students in Turkey, focusing on their perceptions of social exclusion. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates both quantitative and qualitative analyses. A large-scale survey was conducted among 512 international students across multiple Turkish universities to assess their academic and social integration, challenges, and overall experiences. The survey collected demographic data and examined factors influencing their decision to study in Turkey, such as academic quality, cultural proximity, and financial incentives.
To deepen the understanding of social exclusion, qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 selected international students. These interviews provided nuanced insights into their lived experiences, highlighting issues related to discrimination, social isolation, and institutional barriers. Key findings reveal that while many international students appreciate Turkey’s academic offerings and cultural familiarity, they frequently encounter exclusionary practices, including language difficulties, limited social integration, and bureaucratic obstacles concerning visa and residency procedures.
This study contributes to the discourse on international student migration by shedding light on the dual dynamics of inclusion and exclusion within the Turkish higher education system. The findings offer valuable implications for policymakers and educational institutions aiming to improve international students’ experiences and foster a more inclusive academic environment.
