Yetunde Oni
ABSTRACT:
This paper explores the field of digital activism with an emphasis on the use of Instagram as a platform for the advancement of LGBT rights and awareness. Also, the difficulties that digital activism faces, such as shallow engagement, cyber-bullying, incitement of violence will be discussed in the paper. Our focus will be on the impact of Instagram campaigns for the advancement of LGBT rights, supported by case studies and successful platform-based activism initiatives. The role of digital activism in bolstering legal recognition of LGBT rights globally through policy influence will also be highlighted. In essence, I will discuss how advocacy efforts carried out through digital platforms can impact the formation and modification of laws and regulations in nations. Ultimately, advancing the cause of LGBT rights on a global scale. An important component of this discussion which centers around Kantian ethics based on the ideas of the famous philosopher, Immanuel Kant about privacy, responsibility, and the spread of misleading information is addressed as well. Kant’s deontological ethics emphasize how crucial it is to maintain strict moral standards with reference to the field of digital activism, and how important it is to provide helpful advice to make sure these standards are followed. It shows how online communities, particularly Instagram, can powerfully amplify voices, spread awareness, and foster empowerment within the LGBT community while also affecting the future course of LGBT rights advocacy
