ABSTRACT:
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a new educational reality, providing teachers and students an enormous opportunity to enhance the learning experience further. According to the latest report of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) (2022), many national policies have already been created to use AI and incorporate the AI concept into the classroom (Schiff, 2021). However, there is a need to rethink teachers’ role in an AI environment where students and teachers create a technology-based lesson focusing on innovation, critical thinking and collaboration ( Zhai et al., 2021). The study investigates the co-creation of learning material that integrates various AI applications and platforms using the co-design approach. This process involves teachers and researchers working together to create a compelling and meaningful lesson to be integrated into a primary education classroom. The role of the teachers was significant in this process since it enabled them to develop engaging, flexible and adjustable material based on primary students’ needs and interests. Feedback from participating teachers reveals significant insights on the importance of the teacher’s involvement in the co-creation process, which impacts the quality and appropriateness of such integration of AI in the classroom. The research highlights some important considerations for the co-design approach in educational settings and presents the essential components that an AI-integrated lesson should have.
