Gender based Violence and Women’s Well-Being after Military Coup in Myanmar

ABSTRACT:

Women have been used as political weapons over the past decades in Myanmar and the recent military coup is no different.  However, the persistent neglect of women’s needs—particularly in addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and its impact on mental health—remains as a critical gap in both policy and practice.  The needs of women are neglected and GBV is not seen as a primary concern or major issue. This study examines the effect of GBV on mental health in Myanmar post-coup and evaluates the region’s mental health knowledge and access to support. The study uses preliminary data to understand the violence towards women and spread awareness about women’s mental health, justice, and well-being.  The study also reflects on the sentiments of women’s resilience after the coup.  The feedback of the participants will be used to justify the continuation of research work on the subject and modify mental health education for women empowerment through women’s personal experiences.
