Bridging Social Gaps: The Role of Technology in Enhancing Social Relationships Among the Elderly in Kerala

Dr. Lebia Gladis N P

ABSTRACT:

This research explores the role of technology in improving social relationships among Kerala’s older adults, a state with a growing aging population and high literacy rates. As the traditional joint family system declines due to nuclearization and migration, several elderly persons face social isolation. Using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys and interviews, the study examines how digital tools like smartphones, social media, and video conferencing help bridge the social gap. Findings highlight technology’s role in sustaining family connections, particularly with those abroad, and nurturing online communities for emotional support. However, challenges such as digital literacy gaps, inadequate rural internet access, and privacy concerns persist. Despite these barriers, the study emphasises technology’s potential to reduce isolation and enhance well-being. It provides insights for policymakers, community leaders, and developers to advance gerontechnology in Kerala’s socio-cultural context.
