Collective Trauma and Social Recovery in Post-Conflict Societies

Mihaela Rus

ABSTRACT:

Collective trauma represents one of the most profound and enduring consequences of armed conflicts, affecting not only individuals but also entire communities and societies. In post-conflict environments, exposure to violence, displacement, human rights violations, and the loss of social structures can generate long-lasting psychological, social, and cultural effects. This paper examines the concept of collective trauma and its impact on social recovery in societies emerging from conflict. It explores how traumatic experiences become embedded in collective memory, influencing social relationships, group identities, and intergenerational transmission of suffering.
The study analyzes the psychological and social mechanisms through which communities cope with the aftermath of conflict, emphasizing the role of resilience, social cohesion, and community-based support systems. Particular attention is given to the importance of truth-seeking initiatives, transitional justice mechanisms, memorialization processes, and reconciliation programs in fostering collective healing. These approaches can contribute to rebuilding trust among affected groups, restoring social networks, and promoting a shared sense of security and belonging.
Furthermore, the paper discusses the challenges that may hinder recovery, including unresolved grievances, political instability, social polarization, and persistent inequalities. Drawing on examples from various post-conflict societies, the research highlights the complex relationship between individual psychological recovery and broader societal reconstruction. Effective social recovery requires not only addressing mental health needs but also creating inclusive institutions and opportunities for dialogue, participation, and justice.
The paper concludes that understanding collective trauma is essential for developing comprehensive post-conflict recovery strategies. Sustainable peace and social reconstruction depend on the capacity of societies to acknowledge past suffering, support healing processes, and strengthen the foundations of social trust and collective resilience.
