Emotongue App, a Digital Intervention on Emotional Management: A Case Study on Its Impact
Luana Bruno, and Alejandro Iborra Cuéllar
ABSTRACT:
Within contemporary society, emotional management, self-knowledge and well-being are crucial for personal and professional success. The present study examines the impact of the Emotongue app, designed to improve emotional management through daily use in natural environments, on two Spanish female teachers. The app, based on the constructionist psychological approach, promotes emotional independence by fostering awareness, self-knowledge and self-regulation. The research employed a qualitative case study methodology, with two participants using the app for over a month and conducting in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was used to examine the data, identifying key themes such as awareness, self-knowledge, emotional management and transformative learning. Results indicate that the app significantly improved participants’ emotional awareness and self-knowledge. Participants reported better emotional management, reduced intensity of negative emotions, and improved personal and professional relationships. The app’s five daily notifications helped internalise emotional management habits, fostering emotional independence. The participants switched from being passive receivers of their emotions to active constructors of their emotional experiences. The study highlights the therapeutic effect of the app, which users liken to having a non-judgmental friend. The Emotongue app facilitated a deeper understanding of emotional patterns and promoted a redefinition of happiness, moving away from high-activation states to an appreciation of calm and authenticity. This research suggests that digital interventions such as Emotongue can effectively improve emotional well-being, offering a scalable and accessible tool for emotional management. Future studies should explore their impact in diverse populations and cultural contexts to generalise the results.
