Managing Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education (AIHE): A Comparative Review of Applications, Challenges, and Future Research

ABSTRACT:
Managing artificial intelligence in higher education requires a comprehensive understanding of its applications, challenges, and future research directions. This paper presents a comparative review of 7 systematic review articles exploring and examining the applications, challenges, and recommendations of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education (AIHE). Drawing from these seven selected studies spanning the years 2019 to 2023, which collectively evaluated 616 research papers, this paper synthesizes insights into the evolving and changing landscape of AIHE. The selected articles offer diverse perspectives, examining trends in publication, geographical distribution, methodological approaches, and thematic areas of focus. This comparative analysis highlights common themes and disparities across the studies, providing a comprehensive overview of the state of AI technology integration in higher education. Specifically, the paper discusses and compares the applications and opportunities of AI in teaching, learning, administration, and student support services, while also addressing challenges and ethical considerations associated with the implementation of AIHE. Furthermore, future recommendations proposed by the studies are synthesized, offering insights into potential avenues for further research and development in the field of AIHE. By synthesizing findings from multiple systematic review articles, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted and multilayered application and impact of AI in higher education and provides valuable insights and understanding for researchers, educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders interested in leveraging AI to enhance teaching and learning outcomes in higher education for faculty and students.
