The Power and Precarity of Tactical Performance in Thailand’s Political Movements
Dr. Rubkwan Thammaboosadee
ABSTRACT:
This paper examines the artistic dimensions of tactical performance in contemporary Thailand, focusing on how creative expression emerges in public spaces during moments of civic engagement. Drawing on a performance studies framework, the study explores how artists and participants use costumes, props, movement, and spatial composition to craft powerful visual narratives. These artistic interventions serve not only as forms of expression but also as means of storytelling and community-building in complex environments. Through an analysis of case studies, the paper reflects on the creative process behind these performances, the aesthetic choices involved, and the imaginative strategies used to navigate public visibility. It also considers the challenges artists face when their work enters contested spaces, and how these experiences inform their evolving practices. By highlighting the role of performance as a creative response to contemporary realities, this study contributes to an understanding of how art can engage with society in subtle yet impactful ways.
