ABSTRACT:
Mangroves are vital ecosystems covering 147,359 km² worldwide, spanning 118 countries. They are arboreal flora or shrubs located in intertidal zones throughout tropical and temperate regions. This ecosystem is recognized both locally and globally for its significant contributions to climate improvement and management. This study aims to assess the impact of human-induced threats on the Mesurado mangrove ecosystem and provides evidence-based recommendations for improved management and environmental sustainability. The research employed a quantitative methodology, examining data in Stata 15.1. A well-structured questionnaire was administered to 399 individuals within the Mesurado wetland via means of Kobo Collect. The principal threat to the Mesurado mangrove forest is the transformation of mangrove regions into residential and commercial properties, driven by the elevated population density in Montserrado County. The result reveals that the Mesurado mangrove forest is experiencing significant ecological stress due to numerous anthropogenic pressures. Pollution emerged as the predominant (70.20%), followed by deforestation (62.74%), and urbanization (51.20%). Moderate risks encompass the destruction of coastal habitats (41.82%), conservation agriculture (45.44%), the combustion of charcoal and firewood (44.47%), and the decline of fish populations (40.86%). These stresses impose cumulative impacts, making the ecosystem and the dependent communities progressively susceptible. The findings from this study can serve as a contribution to developing strategies that balance ecological health with economic needs, thereby contributing to regional and global efforts.
