ABSTRACT:
The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human endeavor, and its measurement is crucial for understanding the well-being of individuals. A myriad of factors may affect happiness, ranging from personal beliefs to societal norms. This study aimed to examine the determinants of happiness in DKI Jakarta, a bustling metropolis where the Happiness Index experienced a slight decrease from 71.33 in 2017 to 70.68 in 2021 during the pandemic. This study used data obtained from Statistics Indonesia to examine nine distinct dimensions. These dimensions encompassed education, employment and income, health, leisure time, social life, environment and safety, home facilities, affection, and meaning in life. The results of the ordinary least squares analysis conducted revealed contrasting effects on happiness between the pre-pandemic and pandemic years. Additionally, education and income were significant factors in 2017, but not in 2021. However, the effect of health increased notably during the pandemic. The novelty of this study lies in its comparative analysis of happiness determinants before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the shifting priorities and resilience of urban residents in response to global crises. The findings provided in this study underscore the remarkable resilience and adaptability exhibited by the residents of Jakarta amidst global challenges and provide valuable insights for policymakers seeking to enhance the quality of urban life, particularly during crises. In addition, this study contributes to the academic discourse on happiness and its multifaceted determinants.
