Generie M. Manuel
ABSTRACT:
Doing research, as one of the best elements in a senior high school curriculum, has birthed various approaches of teaching pedagogies in the field of education. De La Salle University – Integrated School (DLSU IS), for one, has instituted the Research Advising and Mentoring Program (RAMP) since the inception of DepEd’s K-12 program, indulging its senior high school students to do research. The aim of this study is to get the perception, challenges, and insights of the DLSU SHS alumni who underwent the said program to assess its effectiveness that could enhance the experience of the students in the RAMP. It likewise aimed at culling additional information to improve the program further. In so doing, it addresses goal number four of the United Nations’ (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on education – building and upgrading education facilities for every student. Purposedly selected IS alumni participated in qualitative surveys and focus-group discussions (FGDs) to achieve this. From said procedures, the results revealed the respondents’ positive perception towards RAMP due to its following features: 1) Dedicated Research Adviser, 2) Constant Weekly Consultation, 3) Well-planned curriculum, and 4) Constant Program Evaluation. The results also revealed their challenges in the program, such as, 1) Time Management, 2) Academic Workloads, 3) Group Member Participation, and 4) Mental Health. Despite all these, the following insights were shared: 1) Use of Gantt chart or other related systems to plot research activities, 2) Institute workload system, 3) Strengthen peer evaluation rubric, and 4) Incorporate mental health related activities. The results of this study give the program implementer a view of how effective the RAMP is and how to improve it further. Moreover, the said results could be used by other school administrators in enhancing their own research program to also address the UN SDG on achieving quality education.
